Picadilly Circus

along with Trafalgar Square, Picadilly Circus is the most famous square in London. Best known for the huge wall with video screens and dazzling neon advertisements, it is a must-see place. Because of the video screens, Picadilly Circus is often compared to Time Square in New York.

Picadilly Circus is always busy. Tourists flock to the steps of the Eros Fountain, the statue in the center of the square. Picadilly Circus is an ideal starting point for shopping. One of London’s largest shopping streets, Regent Street, runs alongside Picadilly Circus.

It is not exactly known where the name Picadilly comes from. One explanation is that ladies of easy virtue used to offer themselves in this area. These ladies were called ‘Dillies’ and this gave rise to the expression ‘he’s going to pick a Dilly’, which later became Piccadilly.
