the Big Ben

the Big Ben is one of the most famous buildings in London, everyone knows it. However, the tower is not called Big Ben at all, but the Elizabeth Tower. Big Ben is the name of the large clock that hangs at the top of the tower. Big Ben is probably named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who oversaw the installation. The story goes that he was called that because of his size.

Big Ben is a huge clock: almost 3m high and weighing 14 tons. The distinctive sound of Big Ben was first heard on July 11, 1859.

the Big Ben is part of the Houses of Parliament where the British government resides. Diagonally opposite Big Ben, on the other side of the Thames, is the London Eye.
