The National Gallery Museum is one of the most famous museums in London. It is located in Trafalgar Square and was founded in 1824. Since then it has since become one of the most prestigious art museums in the world. From early Renaissance paintings by the likes of Botticelli and da Vinci, to masterpieces by more modern greats such as Monet and Van Gogh, the National Gallery houses an unrivalled collection of Western art.
The museum first opened its doors to the public in Trafalgar Square in 1824, displaying a small collection of paintings that had been acquired by the British government. The gallery soon outgrew its space and relocated to larger premises in 1834. In 1846, an Act of Parliament was passed which resulted in the establishment of the National Gallery as a separate institution from the British Museum.
The National Gallery continued to grow throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, acquiring new works of art and expanding its facilities. A major extension was completed in 1991, which added two new wings and increased the size of the gallery by 60%. Today, the National Gallery is one of London’s most popular tourist attractions, with over 6 million visitors each year.
The National Gallery Museum is a place where people from all walks of life can come together and enjoy art. It is one of the many things that makes London such a unique and special city.
